“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” – Aristotle
A little bit about me:
My name is Jessica Mattheis, and this is my second year at South O’Brien! I’m very excited to be here! I grew up in Laurens, Iowa, and graduated from Laurens-Marathon High School in 2006. Following high school, I attended Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, graduating summa cum laude in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Theatre. When I graduated from college, I never thought I would be a teacher! It wasn’t until after I began working as a paraeducator and speech coach in a different school district that I decided teaching might be for me. I went back to BVU in 2015 and got my teaching license in English/Language Arts, as well as Speech/Theatre. I am currently attending the University of Northern Iowa, working on my Master’s of Education in Literacy.
Outside of school, I enjoying reading, writing, keeping up with the ever-changing world of theatre, watching sports (Go Hawks!) and spending time outdoors. My husband, Denis, and I love South O’Brien so much that we moved to Paullina last March!
What I teach:
I currently teach Spanish I, Spanish II, Spanish III, one section of 7th grade language arts, and an 8th grade HEX. In my classroom, we’re working on becoming great Spanish speakers! This looks a little bit different depending on what level students are at. Each day, we practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities. We also spend a lot of time learning about the culture of Spanish-speaking countries.
