Mr. Brian Cole teaches students in grades 7-12, directing the middle school and high school concert and jazz bands, the high school marching band, and the high school pep band. Prior to arriving in Paullina in the summer of 2013, he taught 6-8 band at West Delaware in Manchester from 2008-2012 and 5-12 band at East Buchanan Community Schools in Winthrop from 2000-2008.
Brian received his Bachelor of Music Education from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa in May 2000. Among other honors, he was the college chapter president of the Music Educators National Conference and directed the Ninth Street Jazz Band for two years. He played principal trumpet as the Wartburg College Wind Ensemble , under the direction of Dr. Craig Hancock, where he performed at the Iowa Bandmasters Convention in May 2000. Brian played first trumpet with the Iowa Collegiate All-Star Band at the Iowa Music Educators Association convention in November 1999. He is a native of rural Ryan, Iowa, where his family (parents Jim and Carol and brothers Bruce and Scott) farms and graduated from West Delaware Schools in Manchester, Iowa. Brother Doug is an English teacher at Eaglecrest High School in Denver, Colorado.
His professional memberships include the National Education Association, the Iowa State Educators Association, the South O’Brien Education Association, the Iowa Alliance for Arts Education, the Iowa Bandmasters Association, and the Northeast Iowa Bandmasters Association where he served as webmaster and research and development chairperson.
Brian has been involved with the Iowa Ambassadors of Music since 2000. He earned a Masters of Music Education degree from Kansas State University in 2015. He has also been a member of the Waterloo Municipal Band under the direction of Dr. Bill Shepard and has played in the Cedar Rapids Municipal band under the direction of Dr. Morgan Jones, the Independence Municipal Band under the direction of David Lang, and the Manchester Community Band under the direction of Mark Taylor. Mr. Cole has also played trumpet for the Pass the Hat Players theater group in Manchester and the Opera House Players in Elkader in addition to directing pit orchestras for the Independence and North-Linn schools. In the summer of 1998, Brian marched lead soprano with the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps from Dubuque, Iowa, where the corps finished 12th at the World Finals in Orlando, Florida. He has also played with the Wartburg Community Symphony Orchestra in Waverly.
Mr. Cole has also served as an adjudicator for middle school solo contests in the Eastern Iowa area. He has also written marching band drill and served as a clinician in the areas of percussion and marching instruction for area marching bands. He also officiates volleyball matches during the fall, basketball games in the winter months, and umpires baseball and softball games during the spring and summer.
