The South O’Brien Soils Evaluation Team of Garrett Wagner, JC Lange, Erin Cooper and Anna Sells placed 3rd at the NW District contest Tuesday, Sept 29. Garrett was named Champion Individual and JC 9th Place Individual. By placing 3rd, they advance to the state contest. This is the 20th year in a row that a South O’Brien team has advanced to state!
South O’Brien FFA members competed in several events on Sat, Aug 29, 2015.
The State Milk Quality & Products team placed 5th in the State. Team members were Izaak Hoey, JC Lange, Zach Riedemann and Alec Schoof. This is only the 3rd year the chapter has competed in the event.
Emily Mars and Garrett Wagner teamed up with 2 individuals from Muscatine and won Reserve Champion team honors in the State 4-H Meats Evaluation event. Garrett earned Grand Champion Individual and Emily placed 7th overall.
The FFA Meats Judging team was crowned Champions for the 2nd year in a row, and 3rd out of the last 4 years. Team members were Anna Sells, Ben Aberson, Paige Ginger and Alicyn Rehder. They placed 1st in 4 out of 5 categories and 2nd in the 5th. Anna was named Champion Individual overall and also won Retail ID. Ben lost the tie breaker for 2nd and placed 3rd overall, Alicyn and Paige tied and were 4th and 5th, with Alicyn also placing 1st in Wholesale/Retail judging. Perfect scores in Retail ID are very rare, with the last time being in 2010 by Colton Barnes of South O’Brien. This year3 South O’Brien FFA members had perfect scores which no chapter has had in the history of the event.

I’m pleased to inform you that National FFA has been afforded the opportunity to send a National Agriscience Fair winning project to Washington D.C. next week to participate in the White House Science Fair. The event is a celebration of the student participants of various science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) competitions from all over the country. This event will take place on Monday, March 23, at the White House. It will be streamed live at the following link: www.whitehouse.gov/live. This year’s selected participant is Eric Koehlmoos from South O’Brien FFA at Paullina in Iowa. Eric was the 2014 national winner in Power, Structural, and Technical Systems: Division 2.

President Obama to Host 5th White House Science Fair
WASHINGTON, DC – On Monday, March 23rd, the President will host the 5th White House Science Fair, celebrating the student winners of a broad range of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competitions from across America. The President will also announce new steps as part of hisEducate to Innovate campaign to get more girls and boys, especially those from traditionally underrepresented groups, inspired and prepared to excel in the critical STEM fields. Building on these announcements, this year’s White House Science Fair will include a focus on diversity and inclusion in STEM.
The President hosted the first-ever White House Science Fair in 2010, noting then, “If you win the NCAA championship, you come to the White House. Well, if you’re a young person and you produce the best experiment or design, the best hardware or software, you ought to be recognized for that achievement, too.”

National FFA Leadership Conference Results
Congratulations to Eric Koehlmoos for being named National Champion for the 2nd year in a row in the National FFA Agriscience Power and Structural Systems Division II category.
Congratulations to the Meats Evaluation Team of Wyatt Sickelka, Dylan Riedemann, Karle Negus and JC Lange for earning the chapter’s first Gold rating in a National Team Career Development Event. The team placed 15th out of 43 teams.
The South O’Brien FFA Soils Evaluation Team was the NW District Champion team in competition onTues, Sept 30, in Sioux City. Leah Bunkers was the Overall Champion, Dylan Riedemann was Reserve Champion, JC Lange placed 10th and Garrett Wagner placed 18th. The win lets the team advance to the State Contest later in October.

South O’Brien FFA competed in State Career Development Events on Sat, Aug 23, 2014 and did very well.
Ben Aberson and Garrett Wagner placed 12th in the State Milk Quality and Products CDE.
The Livestock Team placed 5th in the State CDE, with Eric Koehlmoos bringing home Reserve Champion Individual honors. Chase Fuhrman, Olivia Sickelka and Stephanie Westra were the other members of the team.
Anna Sells garnered the Champion Individual title in the State 4-H Meats Evaluation CDE.
The Meats Evaluation Team of Wyatt Sickelka, Dylan Riedemann, Karle Negus and JC Lange brought the State Champion Team title back to South O’Brien.
Other team honors were 1st Place Wholesale/Retail Judging, 1st Place Problem Solving, 1st Place Retail Cut ID and 1st Place Quality and Yield Grading. Individually, Wyatt was the Overall Individual Champion and also placed 1st in Retail Cut ID, 1st in Quality & Yield Grading and 1st in Problem Solving. Dylan was close behind, earning Overall Reserve Champion Individual and 1st in Carcass placings. JC placed 4th and Karle 5th.
