Our mission is to prepare students to be responsible citizens and lifelong learners.
At South O’Brien Elementary School we believe that our students can achieve their highest possible intellectual, social, physical, and character development and have the right and responsibility to learn in a safe and academically effective environment.
To ensure success for every student with their own unique needs, we promote a community where the expectations for all members include listening, being prepared, and being responsible and respectful. We believe that meeting these expectations will create an optimal learning environment. At South O’Brien we have established a vision that includes our Paws Expectations:
The Iowa Department of Education, along with the Northwest AEA Board of Directors gave the award to the South O’Brien Elementary for their work on implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. (PBIS) This is the fourth year in a row that the elementary has been awarded. The banner plus level is a step up from the banner level that the school has received the previous three years.
Across the state schools’ are implementing PBIS to focus on conditions to support learning by providing positive, predictable, and safe environments. When done effectively, PBIS has been shown to reduce major disciplinary infractions, reduce out of school suspension, improve social behavior, improve academic achievement and improve school climate.
