“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” – Aristotle
A little bit about me:
My name is Jessica Mattheis, and this is my very first year at South O’Brien! I’m very excited to be here! I grew up in Laurens, Iowa, and graduated from Laurens-Marathon High School in 2006. Following high school, I attended Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, graduating summa cum laude in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Theatre. When I graduated from college, I never thought I would be a teacher! It wasn’t until after I began working as a paraeducator and speech coach in a different school district that I decided teaching might be for me. I went back to BVU in 2015 and got my teaching license in English/Language Arts, as well as Speech/Theatre. I am currently attending the University of Northern Iowa, working on my Master’s of Education in Literacy.
Outside of school, I enjoying reading, writing, keeping up with the ever-changing world of theatre, watching sports (Go Hawks!) and spending time outdoors. My husband, Denis, and I live in Aurelia, but we enjoy traveling to South O’Brien for as many events as we can.
What I teach:
I currently teach two sections of 7th grade language arts. In my classroom, we’re working on becoming great writers. Students use interactive notebooks, creative writing journals, group work, and a variety of other activities to sharpen their writing skills.
